The Squirrel Story page 3 - The Mysterious Nocturnal Visitor

On those rare days when I didn't catch a squirrel, the trap was left set at night. But the next morning, I would find the trap completely cleaned out of bait. Something was coming in the night and getting the nuts without springing the trap.

This didn't really bother me to much, since my mission was squirrels, and I could just reload the bait in the morning. Until one night, we discovered what it was.

It turns out that a little mouse could get into the trap and get the food, and wasn't heavy enough to tilt the ramp that sprung the trap. This little mouse was eating good and had a good deal going until he made the mistake of bragging about it to his friend.

Then these two hapless mice together discovered an interesting fact about the animal kingdom: Two mice weigh about as much as a small squirrel. They both went in together after the nuts and bang! I'd caught two mice at once.

The mice were deported, and then another night I captured a less than pleasant guest. Apparently in the possum kingdom, the customary greeting is to show one's teeth, so I tried the standard possum greeting myself.
It must not have worked, because it didn't serve to cheer him up at all. Deported.
